Hello!
My name is John Bertetto, and I will be teaching Biology, Earth Science, and Physical Science courses this school year at Monticello High School. I am also an assistant coach for the football and track teams. This will be my first year teaching in Monticello, and I am very excited to be working in one of the greatest schools in the country. I grew up in the little town of Benld, IL, which is about two hours southwest of here. I graduated from Gillespie High School, which is similar in size to Monticello. I received my biology and education degrees from Blackburn College in Carlinville, IL, where I also played football for four years. I earned my master’s degree in biology from Eastern Illinois University. This will be my eleventh year of teaching altogether. I served as the biological science teacher at Sullivan High School for nine years before coming to Monticello. Prior to my time in Sullivan, I served as the junior high science teacher in Ramsey, IL. I have been married for ten years to my wife Lisa who is an art teacher at Lovington Grade School, and we have just recently bought a home here in Monticello. We have one child, a one year old boy named Jack who keeps us very busy.
I want all the students and parents to know that I love biology and science and hope the students learn and gain an interest also! To do this, I plan to make class interesting, stimulating, and valuable by using hands-on activities, projects, and dissections to get the students involved. I am striving to make my classes student-centered, so we will be utilizing a lot of small group inquiry activities and using case studies to help the students get more actively involved in their learning. The students will definitely be challenged in my classes and will have to work hard to earn the grade they desire. My goal is to help prepare all my students for the challenges of life. I am also committed to providing the knowledge and skills needed for success to the students who will go on to pursue further studies or careers in biology and science. I really enjoy seeing my students grow into mature, responsible young adults through their high school years, and I strive to have a positive role in this process.
